The Lost Colony of Roanoke Island

Roanoke Island was home to the first English colony in the New World.  Sponsored by Sir Walter Raleigh, Fort Raleigh was first colonized in the late 1500s.  The ultimate fate of the colony still remains a mystery.

Today, the Fort Raleigh National Historic Site protects the remnants of the historic colony, as well as celebrating the heritage of Native Americans and other early Europeans in the Americas.
