It's the epithet on North Carolina's license plate. It is the legacy that the Wright Brothers, Orville and Wilbur, left to North Carolina when they took off on the first powered flight a Kitty Hawk. The phrase is not without its controversy. Indeed, the claim is not without its controversy. But the National Park Service has erected a memorial to the event that effectively launched man's leap into powered flight.
